When we make a new acquaintance one of the first things we often ask is “where are you from?” Knowing where someone is from can help us understand them better, and makes for great conversation, besides aren’t we all just naturally curious?
Perhaps you’ve wondered the same thing while looking at a jar of Crofter’s Organic sitting on your table, with that cute bear staring back at you as you enjoy your morning tea or coffee. Well sit back friend and we’ll tell you a bit about our home and the reasons why we’ve stayed put for over 26 years.
Every jar of Crofter’s is made in Parry Sound, a small town in northern Ontario, Canada. The town itself is pretty typical of communities in northern Ontario, but we think the landscape and natural beauty make it anything but ordinary. Everyday we wake up surrounded by lush forests, glistening lakes, wildlife, and rock – lots of rock. The best thing about life in Parry Sound is hands down, Georgian Bay. Our facility is right at the mouth of the Seguin River where it meets Georgian Bay. Georgian Bay is part of Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes of North America. It’s a special place in the world that is known as the 30,000 islands, each a rugged masterpiece of granite and windswept pines surrounded by crystal clear waters. UNESCO has even recognized the area as unique by designating it a biosphere reserve. We couldn’t ask for a more perfect setting for making organic fruit spreads.
Crofter’s started as an organic brand in 1989, back in the days when the organic movement was just beginning. Setting up shop on the shores of Georgian Bay was almost serendipitous. Our founders Gerhard and Gabriele Latka were new to Canada from Germany, and were searching for the perfect place to start making a more nutritious, organic fruit spread. If it wasn’t for a recommendation to head north for a weekend to Parry Sound, who knows where our home would be today. We’re just glad they fell in love with Parry Sound and recognized that an organic company would undoubtedly flourish in the right environment. Through the years Crofter’s has grown to become the largest manufacturer of organic fruit spreads in North America, but our roots are still firmly planted in Parry Sound. Each jar of Crofter’s is still carefully made in the same facility where it all started. Sometimes we are amazed at how our little facility hums along, sending jars of delicious organic fruit spread on their journey to market and tables of our fans around the world.
So next time you pick up a jar of Crofter’s you will know where it came from, and you can imagine our bear sitting contented in the bushes, perhaps along the shores of Georgian Bay, picking the best berries to sustain him through a long northern winter. Of course what’s in the jar is just as important as where it’s from, and we know you are curious about what makes Crofter’s taste so great, but we’ll save that story for your next cup of tea.
